Moving Your Pet to Alaska: The Ultimate Guide to IATA Kennel Acclimation

Relocating to The Last Frontier is a massive undertaking for any family. At Alaska Pet Movers we specialize in providing safe, stress free transportation for animals traveling to and from Alaska. While our team expertly handles the complex flight logistics, weather, embargoes, and airline requirements the most critical step of the journey starts right in your living room: kennel acclimation.

Once you have the appropriate kennel, the goal is simple: by the time departure day arrives, your pet should view their travel crate as their personal, secure, safe space.

 Acclimating Cats (Patience is Key)

Cats typically take much linger to acclimate than dogs and are incredibly sensitive to environment and scent changes.

  • Prioritize Scent: Place an absorbent material, like a blanket or unwashed t-shirt that smells like you onto the kennel flooring. This provides a familiar and comforting scent and area for your cat.
  • Location Matters: Be sure to place your kennel in your cat’s favorite area. If possible, remove the door entirely to begin with or securely prop it open so it wont accidentally startle them.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Begin to feed your cat’s daily meals near the kennel. As they become more comfortable, place the bowl closer and closer to the kennel until your cat feel confident enough to eat in their kennel.
  • A Hidden Benefit: Acclimating your cat this way isn’t just useful for flights, this can also reduce stress for vet visits. this process can help make vet visits easier on you and your veterinarian.

 Acclimating Dogs (Structured Progression)

Dogs generally adapt to new spaces faster than cats, but still require structured introductions to avoid feeling trapped or scared.

  • Make It Fun: Encourage your dog to explore their kennel by tossing in high-value treats or their favorite toy to fetch!
  • Encourage Rest: Place their favorite bedding inside and encourage them to nap or sleep in their kennel. This is great time to calmly praise your pup.
  • Practice Confinement: Once they voluntarily rest inside, begin closing the door for very short intervals while you remain in the room. Then, gradually increase the time the door is closed and reward them with some more calm praise.
